Infectious disease dynamics in metapopulations with heterogeneous transmission and recurrent mobility

چکیده

Abstract Human mobility, contact patterns, and their interplay are key aspects of our social behavior that shape the spread infectious diseases across different regions. In light new evidence data sets about these two elements, epidemic models should be refined to incorporate both heterogeneity human contacts complexity mobility patterns. Here, we propose a theoretical framework allows accommodating in form set Markovian equations. We validate equations with extensive mechanistic simulations derive analytically threshold. The expression this critical value us evaluate its dependence on specific demographic distribution, structure flows, thus shedding microscopic mechanisms responsible for detriment driven by recurrent patterns reported literature.

Infectious disease in animal metapopulations: the importance of environmental transmission

Motivated by an array of infectious diseases that threaten wildlife populations, a simple metapopulation model (subpopulations connected by animal movement) is developed, which allows for both movement-based and environmental transmission. The model demonstrates that for a range of plausible parameterizations of environmental transmission, increased movement rate of animals between discrete hab...

Disease dynamics in metapopulations

Structured populations are of particular interest when discussing disease dynamics. A common approach is to consider metapopulations: a group of coupled, well-mixed patches (also called (sub)populations or households). Two, frequently used ways to realize coupling are to introduce between-patch contact rates and to allow migration. Although these two ways describe different real-life situations...

Dynamics of Adaptation in Spatially Heterogeneous Metapopulations

The selection pressure experienced by organisms often varies across the species range. It is hence crucial to characterise the link between environmental spatial heterogeneity and the adaptive dynamics of species or populations. We address this issue by studying the phenotypic evolution of a spatial metapopulation using an adaptive dynamics approach. The singular strategy is found to be the mea...

Impact of commuting on disease persistence in heterogeneous metapopulations

We use a stochastic metapopulation model to study the combined effects of seasonality and spatial heterogeneity on disease persistence. We find a pronounced effect of enhanced persistence associated with strong heterogeneity, intermediate coupling strength and moderate seasonal forcing. Analytic calculations show that this effect is not related with the phase lag between epidemic bursts in diff...

Dynamics of infectious disease transmission by inhalable respiratory droplets.

Transmission of respiratory infectious diseases in humans, for instance influenza, occurs by several modes. Respiratory droplets provide a vector of transmission of an infectious pathogen that may contribute to different transmission modes. An epidemiological model incorporating the dynamics of inhalable respiratory droplets is developed to assess their relevance in the infectious process. Inha...
